Gounod could not grant the request of his correspondent who wished to attend the first performance of Romeo and Juliet at the Paris Opera.

“Dear Madam, I am most sorry, but I do not have the authority to reserve seats (even for rent) for the premiere of Romeo. The directors are overwhelmed and no longer know how to manage the obligations and considerations that accompany these kinds of events. Events! Good heavens, they are like tornadoes—like cyclones! I believe there is no other option but to write to the secretariat and request that your name be added to the list of those wishing to attend the premiere^. My deepest regrets, dear Madam, and with the most respectful regards. Ch. Gounod”

Romeo and Juliet was created at the Paris Opera Theatre on April 27, 1867.

More than twenty years later, the work, in a revised version with the addition of a ballet, entered the repertoire of the Paris Opera on November 28, 1888.
