Superb work, witness to the little-known period (1951-1963) of Vasarely: “ the black and white period ”. These binary compositions of black shapes on white backgrounds and/or white shapes on black backgrounds constitute the basis of his research, the beginnings of his Alphabet of Plastic Units.

In 1957, Vasarely wrote about his research on black and white: “Doesn't optics, even if it is an illusion, belong to kineticism? Negatives – positives, slides, photograms, mind-blowing interplay of black and white. Hence my discovery: the same composition resolved in white and black automatically gives me a second composition resolved in black and white. The two works are qualitatively equal, both identical and diametrically opposed: mirror images. I deduced from this, philosophically speaking, that the signs white and black, the inevitable antinomy of ideas of the past such as day and night, angel and devil, good and evil, are in reality complementarities, fertile androgynous ideas .

A certificate of authenticity from Mr. Pierre Vasarely, dated November 7, 2019, will be given to the buyer.
