Victor Hugo (1802.1885)

Autographed letter signed to George Sand.

One and a half pages in-8° on mourning paper.

(Brussels). September 3 (1868).

A very moving letter from Hugo, signed twice, thanking George Sand for her condolences following the death of his wife Adèle Foucher Hugo.

"O great heart, yes, weep for this great heart. You are in glory, she is in the light. I kiss your hands. VH"

Adèle Foucher Hugo died on August 27, 1868, in Brussels, from a cerebral hemorrhage. She is buried in Villequier, next to Léopoldine, the Hugo couple's eldest daughter, who tragically died in 1843. Victor Hugo, in exile and outlawed, was only able to accompany his wife's coffin as far as the Franco-Belgian border.

On August 30th, George Sand wrote these words to the great man : “My heart has been with yours during these bitter days, a great ordeal of great courage. What can be said to you that your soul doesn't already tell you, and better? One can only tell you that the more misfortune strikes you, the more you are respected and loved. G. Sand”

Hugo gave our present letter to Paul Meurice for George Sand, as evidenced by Hugo's correspondence: " Tomorrow Charles and Victor will send the intimate details that M. de St-Victor desires ; as soon as the article is published, I will write to him. Tell him so, my dear friend, and in the meantime, tell him how much his letter touched me. Would you be so kind as to pass this note on to Madame George Sand? Your admirable words from Villequier are being reprinted in all the Belgian newspapers. I send you my old, grieving heart that loves you."
