Victor HUGO (1802.1885)

Autograph letter signed to George Sand.

A ½ in-8° page on mourning paper.

(Brussels). September 3 (1868).

Very moving letter from Hugo, signed twice, thanking George Sand for his condolences following the death of his wife Adèle Foucher Hugo.

“O great heart, yes, cry to this great heart. You are in the glory, it is in the light. I kiss your hands. VH »

Adèle Foucher Hugo died on August 27, 1868, in Brussels, of cerebral congestion. She is buried in Villequier, near Léopoldine, eldest daughter of the Hugo couple, who tragically disappeared in 1843. Victor Hugo, exiled, proscribed, could only follow his wife's coffin as far as the Franco-Belgian border.

On August 30, George Sand wrote these words to the great man : “My heart was with yours during these bitter days, a very great test of great courage. What can we say to you that your soul does not tell you more and better? We can only tell you that the more misfortune hits you, the more people respect and love you. G.Sand »

Hugo delivered our present letter to Paul Meurice for the attention of George Sand, as evidenced by the Hugo correspondence: “ Tomorrow Charles and Victor will send the intimate details that M. de S t -Victor desires; as soon as the article appears, I will write to him. Tell him, my sweet friend, and in the meantime tell him how much his letter touched me. Would you like to pass this note on to Ms. George Sand. Your admirable words from Villequier are reproduced by all Belgian newspapers. I send you my broken old heart that loves you. »
