Mann negotiates the terms of the contract providing for the translation of his books into French.

“Dear Sir, I hesitate to send you back the signed contract that you kindly sent to me because there is still one part that worries and concerns me. I am sure that I am ready to talk to you about the terms of publication of my books, the format to give them, the number of strips, the number of volumes, also about the order and the date of publication (…) However, it is not seems not acceptable, as provided in #1, to speak out about books that have not yet been published for six years (…) I would also like to stick to the basic assumption that I have to bear the translation costs (…) In practice, however, I hesitate to negotiate with the translators the share to be paid to them and would like them to do it themselves, at least for the moment. (…) I am grateful in advance if you could tell me your impressions of Mr. Delage’s French translations. »
