“List from October 15, 1783. I pray that the objects are sent before the holidays.

The white paper as detailed in the letters.

Arabic pastilles tested before sending them.

The linen requested.

Three more pieces of stomach.

The case.

A table mat with the measurements sent.

Two head ribbons.

Largest size night candles.

The little box of necessities, an object on which it is good to make an observation, is that it is only necessary for me here, and that outside I have no use for it.

The rump cushion. Basically.

The twelve pairs of stockings.

Two bottles of peach wine.

Sequel to the Good Empire.

Continuation of the history of France.

Traveler's Suite.

Almanacs and new comedies.

Works by Darnaud.

From Dorat. From St Lambert. From Lille.

The Decameron François twenty volumes… from 1777 to 17783 (sic)….

Twenty or thirty volumes because I am absolutely and literally short of them. I am not asking you for a fortnight on purpose, so that you can send me instead, books which I absolutely cannot do without for 8 days, especially those of second reading which I still have for the week and no more. I kiss you with all my heart. »

Sade, during his imprisonment, read continuously. He was consulting the catalog of the bookseller Mérigot le Jeune, at the corner of Quai des Augustins (today Quai des Grands-Augustins) and Rue Pavée (today Rue Séguier). After choosing history books, scientific works, the texts of philosophers, travel stories, he ordered them from his wife.
