“We will recognize everywhere the greatness of this suffering soul. »

After the biographical essay he devoted to Marceline Desbordes-Valmore, Zweig is delighted with a new publication on the French poet and the distribution of his own work in English, thus ensuring the posterity of this suffering soul.

“Sir, you have given me an admirable gift with your superb edition of the Desbordes Valmore: my little book on her is now appearing in England and America and finally we will recognize everywhere the greatness of this suffering soul. Your edition is one of the beautiful books made in France and I congratulate you on the art and taste of the composition and I have no doubt that its perfection will be rewarded with full success. Yours truly devoted Stefan Zweig. »

It was in 1902, while preparing an anthology of Verlaine's poems, that Zweig discovered the work of Desbordes-Valmore. Passionate about tragic destinies, a talented storyteller, he gives a vibrant tribute to the poet in his biography published for the first time in Austria in 1920.

Marcel Seheur published, in 1928, a beautiful edition of “Poèmes et proses” by Marceline Desbordes-Valmore, decorated with a portrait of the poet on the frontispiece.
