“Ugliness is superior to beauty in that it lasts. »

Precious typed brochure – very abundantly annotated and corrected by Serge Gainsbourg – preparatory to the edition of the work Gainsbourg, Au pays des Malices published by Editions Le Temps singular in October 1980.

Fascinating dive into the artist's universe, depicting his personality through the prism of around twenty aphorisms and fragments of dialogue. The sentence of Pontius Pilate, ECCE HOMO , was regularly taken up by the artist who, here, uses it as the title of his statement mixing autobiographical story and various provocations.

As an epigraph, Oscar Wilde's aphorism on cynicism is crossed out and replaced by the famous quote from Lichtenberg, written by Gainsbourg in black ink: " Ugliness is superior to beauty in that it lasts ".

There then follow around twenty typed and handwritten entries and numerous deletions; here are a few :

Lucien GINZBURG now it’s happening . I wanted to be called Julien because of Julien Sorel, Stendhal's hero. Afterwards I came across Lucien Leuwen, another Stendhal hero. It reconciled me with my first name, ultimately I chose Serge.

Why Serge? -Out of nostalgia for a Russia that I never knew…

I turned my jacket inside out when I realized it was lined with mink.

I am not of this world. I'm not from any world.

I am Jewish. In '42, I had a Sheriff's star like that! But Jewish is not a religion. No religion grows a nose like that. I dont have a religion.

Shh! Love is a crystal that breaks silently.

My Rolls is unique in that the two R's on the grille are red. It's very rare. When Mr. Rolls died, an R became black And after Royce, both. (SG note in the margin: First names and knowing who broke his pipe first).

Have you ever had a heart attack? – Yes, I have already killed two cardiologists.
