In 1980, in the depths of his despair, abandoned by Jane Birkin, Serge Gainsbourg accepted the offer of his friend Claude Berri to play the role of Simon in his film I love you , alongside Catherine Deneuve, Alain Souchon, Jean-Louis Trintignant and Gérard Depardieu. This intimate film gives Gainsbourg the opportunity to deepen his friendly ties with Catherine Deneuve: “I was feeling bad. Catherine….. she didn't just help me get out of a bad situation: maybe it's thanks to her that I didn't get shot. » A few months later, he wrote the only album performed by Deneuve, Remember to forget me.

Gainsbourg also produced the film's soundtrack. This is based around the seven songs listed here (performed by Deneuve, Depardieu, and Gainsbourg) also available in instrumental versions. The album was recorded in May 1980 at the Ferber studio and highlights one of Gainsbourg's songs most appreciated by the general public, Dieu est un smoker de Havanes.
