René Magritte (1898-1967)

Autograph letter signed by his friend André Bosmans.

Beautiful critical letter on his friend's work, Le socle de la nuit.

Dear friend, Thank you for sending your first collection of poems. “Nothingness is the only great wonder of the World” and many other thoughts always resemble the world and what makes it exist. One of these thoughts – absolutely admirable: “We launch thought in the form of muddy earth” designates a world which resembles a thought subject to uses (scientific for example) – which are no less naive all things considered. My thought, in its rebelliousness, that is to say its freedom, will never agree with a usage where corpuscles and splinters are supposed to be possible in poetry. Fortunately, our thinking is almost always rebellious to such use. You will consider, I believe, that “Le socle de la nuit” should be sent (if you wish with a dedication) to Mr. Harry Toreygner, Attorney at law – 521 Fifth Avenue- New York 17 NY – USA (form the figures one by one I (and not by a 1 which is understood in the USA as a 7) Kind regards, René Magritte

André BOSMANS (1922.2014), Liégeois poet and admirer of Magritte, wrote to Magritte to express his esteem, in August 1958. This first letter is the start of an intense correspondence. In 1961, Bosmans founded the magazine “Rhétorique” which served as a “platform” for Magritte. Bosmans remained loyal to Magritte and their 400 letters were published in full in 1990.
