Magritte defines what he considers mystery in art.

“Dear Madam, Thank you for sending me your news. I regret that the painting you had is not reproduced in color , perhaps that will come one day? On the subject of your friend's collages, I probably lack the imagination to find figures there – hardly surprising at all. If there is mystery, it is necessarily unknowable – or else it is an open mystery. For my part, I never look for intentions in a work other than those of its author. Writing and painting seem to me worth considering insofar as they manifest a feeling unfamiliar with poetry. They manifest it by evoking the unknowable mystery of familiar things. »
