The author focuses her story on a middle-aged woman who draws on her fortune to maintain young and attractive lovers. The protagonist takes a cynical, disenchanted look at the meaningless world in which she lives: “A tired woman who walked in the woods without real pleasure, simply because she preferred that to the cinema or too noisy bars. »

Fearing the lure, she flees the blindness of love. “She didn't try to play hide and seek with the young people, she was cynical and lucid, they felt it and it inspired them with a minimum of respect. »

In this world of exchange where only luxury and money count (" They considered themselves free, they were bought anything luxurious, anything expensive, that they didn't even want, just to find their own esteem "), the feelings seem misplaced. Thus, when the protagonist's companion, the "gigolo" Nicolas, ignores his mistress' habits, by confessing his attachment to her (" You're different," says Nicolas in a low voice - you... I liked you. J likes your face – How…) he immediately sees himself dismissed by it. “You’re cheating,” she said abruptly in a low voice. (…) Go away. »
