The author focuses her story on a middle-aged woman who uses her fortune to support young and attractive lovers. The protagonist casts a cynical, disenchanted eye on the meaningless world in which she lives: "A weary woman who walked in the woods without real pleasure, simply because she preferred it to the cinema or noisy bars."

Fearing deception, she fled the blindness of love. "She wasn't trying to play hide-and-seek with the young men; she was cynical and clear-sighted, they sensed it, and it inspired a minimum of respect in them."

In this world of exchange where only luxury and money matter (" They considered themselves free, they had anything luxurious, expensive, bought for them, things they didn't even want, solely to regain their self-esteem "), feelings seem out of place. Thus, when the protagonist's companion, the "gigolo" Nicolas, defies his mistress's habits by confessing his feelings for her (" You're different," Nicolas said in a low voice—"you... I liked you. I like your face—" How...") he is immediately dismissed by her. "You're cheating," she said abruptly in a low voice. "(...) Go away. "
