Pablo Picasso (1881.1973)

Autograph letter signed to Max Pellequer.

Four pages in-8° on squared paper.

Written successively in orange grease pencil and blue pen.

Vauvenargues Castle. August 7, 1959.

Superb letter from the Spanish painter enriched at the head with an original drawing showing a view of his home, the Château de Vauvenargues, overlooked by the majestic Sainte-Victoire mountain dear to Cézanne. In spectacular writing, Picasso thanks his friend for his help, emphatically sending him a full page of “thank you” written in orange pastel which constitutes, in itself, a real painting.

Seduced by the Cézanne landscape of the Sainte Victoire mountain dominating the place, Picasso acquired the Château de Vauvenargues in September 1958: “I live with Cézanne! » he proclaims. It was in this Provençal place that he was buried on April 10, 1973, under exceptionally snow-covered ground in the early hours of spring. Her tomb is topped by a bronze statue, The Woman with the Vase .

Max Pellequer, banker and collector, met Picasso in 1914 through his uncle by marriage, the art dealer André Level. This meeting constitutes the starting point of several decades of friendship between the two men. Pellequer then took charge of the financial management of Picasso's property while advising him on his various affairs. Banker but collector, Pellequer acquired a large collection of works by the master alongside other great names in modern art such as Gauguin, Matisse, Modigliani, Miró, etc.
