“My dear Marshal, I thank you for your letter and I apologize for not having responded sooner. I was in Portugal and when I came back to Paris, I was very rushed. But I thought about you a lot. I am very happy that you are not unhappy in Vienna and that we are organizing an exhibition. I received the manifesto poster for “The Marshal”. I hope your exhibition will have the success you deserve.

I have had the Magnetic Fields copied and am sending you one of the copies. Do you want to read it? I very much hope that you can engrave brass instruments for the Magnetic Fields. I ask you to think about it. It would be a great joy for me if you illustrated this book which is of extreme importance to me. I have the impression that André Breton also very much wants you to engrave illustrations. Maybe he's a little skeptical and doesn't like talking to editors. But I'm sure that when the book is ready to be published, he will be very happy.

My dear Marshal, I apologize for asking you to make an effort which, I know, is difficult and tough . But you are capable, whenever you want, of overcoming difficulties. Write to me. How do you live in Vienna? Do you like it there? Was your exhibition successful?

Dear Marshal, I have not forgotten you. I often dream of your paintings and drawings . And I agree with you. I'm working a lot at the moment. I have to, but sometimes I would like to think about something other than my work. What you need is to be able to be free . I await your news. All my best regards, Philippe Soupault. »
