Very rare photo of Verlaine, in profile, the Socratic figure, with a view to his candidacy for the French Academy.

Verlaine sought the academic chair of Hippolyte Taine by an official letter on August 4, 1893. Mocked by some of his peers, he solicited, in order to improve his image, the photographer of Swedish origin Otto Wegener, known as Otto (1849- 1922) who dedicated a session of six poses to him, in various postures.

Verlaine did not convince, and Albert Sorel was elected to chair no. 25 coveted by the poet.
