The poet is waiting to be paid for the publication of one of his stories written during a stay at Broussais Hospital.

"My dear Vanier, I assure you that the story in question does not come from [Albert] Savine, because I had it presented to Le Figaro , which returned it to me without inserting it, no doubt because of the title that I changed in the copy you have. I gave it to you at Broussais without asking you for money because I did not have the manuscript in ink yet at that time at Le Figaro, which inserted a story of mine written to this same Broussais at the same time (1893), The Obsesseur. So, I expect a little money from your good faith. Yours, P. Verlaine."
