"When you have known the Impressionists, then Seurat, Cross, Angrand and the charming Bonnard, Vuillard, Roussel, Valtat, these three generations of pure artists and charming men, what suffering to see so many scumbags and predators. »
Beautiful letter from Paul Signac, moved by the memory of Douanier Rousseau and his Impressionist friends.

"Dear Sir, Thank you for sending me your copy of Rousseau and for your inscription. Your book is very well done, and you explain the Rousseau case perfectly. For me, it makes me appreciate my old friend from the Independents even more. Just think, Luce and I were practically the only ones defending him before literature saw fit to seize upon our customs officer and make fun of him a bit—initially, it must be said."
But you understood it, you loved it, and with your beautiful publication, you'll win it even more friends. I'm taking this opportunity to tell you that I wholeheartedly support you in your fight against the profiteers of art.
Having known the Impressionists, then Seurat, Cross, Angrand, and the charming Bonnard, Vuillard, Roussel, and Valtat—these three generations of pure artists and charming men—what suffering it is to see so many scoundrels and predators. Sincerely, Paul Signac.
