“Sir, I signed a proof for a black lithograph , the stone of which Dejobert [Desjobert, a lithographic printer in Paris] apparently erased a year ago. Here we are again without anything. Of course, it would be easy to take a tracing and recreate the stone without any regard for the original. But I feel committed after several misunderstandings and cannot refuse you a job you are hoping for. Give me a little time. I will give you a color plate if it is not completely impossible for you to stay in contact without a third party. Furthermore, I will be able to answer you precisely about the title we discussed as soon as my dealer returns from New York. Sincerely, Staël.”
