Margaret THATCHER (1925.2013)

Letter signed (with autograph notes) to Mrs. Judy Adams.

House of Commons letterhead . March 2, 1977.

Beautiful letter from the Iron Lady, still at the head of the Tory Party, on the subject of a law on abortion which caused great debate in England.

“Dear Mrs Adams, Thank you for your letter; I am grateful to you for writing and for putting your view so clearly. Unfortunately, due to long-standing engagements in Finchley I was unable to be in the house of commons when the Abortion (Amendment) bill came up last Friday . But as you will doubtless know, it received a second reading, and will now go to Committee Stage. »

“Dear Mrs. Adams, Thank you for your letter; I am grateful to you for writing to me and for stating your point of view so clearly. Unfortunately, due to previous commitments in Finchley, I was unable to be present in the House of Commons when the Abortion Bill was introduced last Friday. But as you probably know, a second reading has been requested and the project will now be debated in committee. »

The Abortion Bill, introduced by William Benyon in 1977, aimed to reduce the deadline for abortion. The project was ultimately rejected.

Two years later, Margaret Thatcher led the Conservatives to victory and, on May 4, 1979, became the first woman to head the government of a European country.
