On his way to join his parents in Evian, Proust stopped to discover Avallon, at dawn in September 1903, then the medieval architecture of Vézelay which Emile Mâle had recommended to him.

In Evian, he found, in addition to his parents, Louis d'Albufera and Louisa Mornand with whom he ventured to Chamonix and the sea of ice.

The relative calm of Evian allowed him to write a study on Dante Gabriel Rossetti.

A few weeks later, on November 26, 1903, his father, Adrien Proust, died of apoplexy.
