“Sir and dear master, My candidacy for the Academy makes it my duty to request an audience with you . I take great pleasure in this, and regret taking up some of your time. Please accept, sir and dear master, my respectful admiration. Marcel Pagnol. »

Marcel Pagnol was elected to the French Academy on April 4, 1946, by 15 votes in chair 25 of Maurice Donnay, who had occupied his seat from 1907 to 1945. His reception, on March 27, 1947, by Jérôme Tharaud, was filmed, this which constituted a first in the history of the venerable institution.
