“I didn't have time to sort through all my negatives, so didn't find the photo of Paul and Nusch. »

Since his Californian exile, Man Ray inquired with Parisot – then director of La Pléiade – about the publication of his “ Objects of my affection ” and informed him that he had not looked for the photo of Paul and Nusch Éluard .

“Dear friend, Since my return from Paris I must admit that I feel quite tired. Despite all the advantages here – good weather, calm, physical well-being, etc., I have tasted the life to which I have been accustomed for so long, and can only think of returning to it. Where are you with my “Objects of my Affection”? If you have definitely abandoned the idea of publishing them, can you send them back to me as soon as possible? You would be very kind, because there is the possibility of editing them here, and I do not have the courage to make another print. I didn't have time to sort through all my negatives, so didn't find the photo of Paul and Nusch that I promised you. However, I believe I will be back in Paris before next summer, when I will finish my “excavations”. All my regards, and best wishes. Man Ray. »

In 1940, worried about the national situation, Man Ray took refuge in California. He stayed there for more than ten years, before returning to settle in Paris in 1951.
