A beautiful letter written jointly with her friend and companion Charlotte Vauvelle, about reading Charlotte Brontë, which distracted Louise Michel from the anguish of the social situation.

I read it with such pleasure that I momentarily forgot the tedium of living under the current circumstances. It's not that I'm discouraged, but I find that the great human herd has a terrible patience. We haven't written to you for a long time since Charlotte has been very ill. She is only now beginning to feel a little better. I'm giving her some space to write to you…”

Louise Michel finally thanks her correspondent for sending photographs and hands the pen over to Charlotte Vauvelle: “Dear Mr. Alexandre Roy, my letter would be very long if I told you all my impressions about Jane Eyre.
