"My dear Monsieur Vieillard, I learned with great sorrow of the death of your poor sister; it must be a cruel grief for you. I do not know where you are, but if it would do you any good to come and spend a few days in Saint-Cloud, I would be very happy to offer you the consolations of friendship, however futile they may seem in such circumstances. Please accept, my dear Monsieur Vieillard, the assurance of my sincere friendship. Louis Napoleon."

Narcisse Vieillard (1791-1857) was an active supporter of Louis-Napoleon Bonaparte's presidential candidacy. A close confidant of the future Emperor, he actively participated in preparing the coup d'état of December 2, 1851. Appointed senator in January 1852, he nevertheless gradually distanced himself from the regime.

We are enclosing a letter from Pierre-Ange Vieillard, curator at the Arsenal Library. Two quarto pages, dated December 28, 1845.
