“Rheumatism, desolation to observe the whole procession and 77 years completed! »

Very moving letter from Verne, one of the last of his life, in trembling handwriting, to his old traveling companion.

“My dear Robert, Thank you very much for your postcards and my compliments on your superb palace. But you extend your invitation to your old friend, who after 4 months spent in the room last winter, is threatened with spending six this time. Rheumatism, desolation of observing the whole procession and 77 years completed! My wife and I send you our best wishes to Madam Prefect, for her family, and, once again, I say to myself, my dear Robert, your old traveling companion. Jules Verne. »

Suffering from diabetes for several years, Jules Verne had lost his visual acuity to the point of almost preventing him from writing. On March 16, 1905, he was struck down in Amiens by a violent attack and was forced to take to his bed. He will not recover from this attack. The last days of his life were only a slow agony towards death which struck on March 24 of that same year.
