"You have written one of the most striking studies ever published on Men of Good Will."

Jules Romains was particularly moved by his correspondent's article on Men of Good Will.

“Dear Sir, Mademoiselle Andemar has just sent me your article from L’Écho d’Alger. To say I thank you is far too weak. In just a few paragraphs, you have written one of the most striking studies ever published on Men of Good Will. No doubt your kindness alone would be enough to move me—especially as it contrasts so sharply with the ignominious malice of some—but there is something else: this fact (so rare, so wonderful!) that you give precisely the reasons I hope to see reflected in the esteem and interest shown in my work. The word “understanding” has never been more apt. And how could I not be somewhat reassured at the same time? If you, whom I have certainly never indoctrinated, discover all this, which is precisely what my ambition was to include in my work, there is a good chance that it will be reflected there to some extent.” And how could a judge, of such evidently keen intelligence, be completely mistaken in his assessment of a work? I'm not quite sure where to send this letter. I'll ask Miss Andemar. But please be so kind as to give me your address. I wish to stay in touch with you (some of my friends will also want to discuss their projects with you, I'm sure). Yours sincerely, Jules Romains.

Men of Good Will is a series of novels written by Jules Romains, consisting of 27 volumes, published regularly between 1932 and 1946.
