“He was very afraid that Robespierre would take him for me”

Astonishing letter from Fouché evoking his namesake and the memory of Robespierre.

“Citizen Director, One of our mutual friends has just told me that the Minister of Finance presented yesterday to the Directory a request for a position signed by me . I declare that this request and no such request has been made by me. If I had thought of requesting something from the government, please believe, Citizen Director, that you would have been the first to know about it. You will perhaps have the explanation for this mistake by remembering that there existed on the benches of the Convention, a man who bore my name, or rather who had difficulty supporting it; because he was very afraid that Robespierre would take it for me.”
