Mr. Duke, the Duke of Campochiaro and St. Theodoro did not let me ignore the kind welcome you gave them, I thank you for that; I was not surprised because I have known your feelings for me for a long time; I await a new testimony in this circumstance which will have such a great influence on the political happiness of my subjects. I do not hesitate to declare to you that if HM [His Majesty, Napoleon] persists in his project, the prosperity that I had promised to the people that the Emperor entrusted to me will be over; I hope that he will be struck by our position and that he will not want our ruin. Could it be possible that the emperor, who does not know what to do for good, wanted to deviate in this circumstance from this beneficent principle – wanting to free trade from customs duties is wanting to parasitize all our resources. In this circumstance I am counting on the friendship of which you have given me so much proof. My subjects learn with me what you would do for them in this moment. I renew to you, Monsieur le Duc, the assurance of all my feelings. Portici. 28 8 ber 1809.”
