“My dear friend, I came to spend a few days here with my family. I will send the Political Review tomorrow. I was unable to finish the first chapter on competition. I promise it to you in the most formal way for the next issue. I definitely concluded with Rouff. [editor Jules Rouff]. The original program has been expanded: it is, as you desired, the entire history of the century from 1789 to today that we are invited to tell. I have the assured collaboration of all my friends, of [Jules] Guesdes, of [Gabriel] Deville, of [Alexandre] Millerand, of [René] Viviani, of [Eugène] Fournière, of [Paul] Brousse, of two professors socialists of the Herr and Andler normal school.

Of course, I am absolutely counting on you. I thought it would be nice for you to study the grammatica of the [?] and I have reserved for you, in collaboration with Fournière, the reign of Louis-Philippe. There was a great movement of ideas at the same time as a great economic surge. I think you will be interested. And as we begin to appear on November 1 , you will have been able to finish your work on socialism before the Louis-Philippe period comes its turn of publication. It will only be in two years. As soon as you return to Paris, we will talk about all this; but from now on, I am counting on you. It is I who will open fire with the Constituent Assembly and the legislature. Guesde will have the Convention; Deville the Directory and Babouvism; Brousse and Turot the first Empire; Viviani the Restoration; Millerand 1848; Herr and Andler the Second Empire, then helped by Gérault I will take the end. Yours truly. Jaurès. »
