“My dear friend, I have come here to spend a few days with my family. I will send the Revue politique tomorrow. I was unable to finish the chapter on competition. I promise you most formally that it will be completed in the next issue. I have finalized the agreement with Rouff [the publisher Jules Rouff]. The original program has been expanded: as you wished, we are invited to recount the entire history of the century from 1789 to the present day. I have the assured collaboration of all my friends, of Jules Guesdes, Gabriel Deville, Alexandre Millerand, René Viviani, Eugène Fournière, Paul Brousse, and two socialist professors from the École Normale, Herr and Andler.”

Of course, I'm absolutely counting on you. I thought you might enjoy studying the grammar of the [?] and I've reserved the reign of Louis-Philippe for you, in collaboration with Fournière. There was a great intellectual movement along with a major economic boom. I think you'll find it interesting. And since we're starting publication on November 1st , you'll be able to finish your work on socialism before the Louis-Philippe period comes out in turn. That won't be for another two years. As soon as you're back in Paris, we'll discuss all of this; but I'm counting on you right now. I'll be the one to start with the Constituent Assembly and the Legislative Assembly. Guesde will cover the Convention; Deville the Directory and Babouvism; Brousse and Turot the First Empire; Viviani the Restoration; Millerand 1848; Herr and Andler the Second Empire; and then, with Gérault's help, I'll take on the end. Yours sincerely. Jaurès.
