Jacques de Souvré (1600-1670) - Grand Prior of France

Signed letter to Mr. de Vilom

One folio page. Address and wax seal on the fourth leaf.

Paris. February 28, 1670

A very fine letter from Souvré, a few weeks before his death, confirming the privileges of his farmers in the Commandery of Orange.

“Sir, you have so strongly persuaded me that my letters and prayers would be pleasing to you that I continue to make them. It is for the same matter for which I previously asked you concerning the commandery of Orange, to employ you with His Highness the Prince of Orange to obtain confirmation of the privileges previously enjoyed by the tenants of said commandery, and to this end, to take the trouble to have letters issued. Since this is an asset of our order, you see me more eager to ask you for this favor than if it were my own private property. You will greatly oblige me by employing you in such a way that our order may obtain this satisfaction. In return, make use of me on all occasions when you deem I could render you some service, so that I may demonstrate to you that I am, as I have always been, your most humble and obedient servant, J. de Souvré, Grand Prior of France.”
