“Dear Mom, Thank you for your happy birthday wishes. We have had, here as everywhere, terrible weather except for the past week, and now it is getting worse again. It's a very bad season. We traveled by boat a little, but not very much. Even so, we rest and we are not unhappy. Hélène [the eldest daughter of the Joliot-Curie couple, born in 1927] is swimming very well this year although it is not hot: she enters the water very courageously and she does all sorts of antics. She seems to be doing very well this year. I send you a warm kiss and hope that Marguerite [the sister of Frédéric Joliot-Curie] can paint a little despite the bad weather. Irene. »
