“My dear Friend, I am still alive since we do not die of grief! – Above the pains of the homeland I have those of the home. – Consider that I live alone , with my mother who is 77 years old, and that these events are happening, in the middle of a stupid population and assailed by the poor. – We have up to 400 per day!

It all depends on people's sensitivity. Now I don't believe that there is a man in France who suffers more than me. How have I not gone crazy yet!

The surrender of Metz (which is not yet official) is for me something inexplicable? Did Bazaine betray us? What purpose ? – This disaster will demoralize the province. But Paris will hold on. – Before the Prussians enter there will be formidable butcheries . What a war! We have never seen such horrors. systematic devastation . Their dream is to destroy us. It seems to me that I am witnessing the end of the world.

I haven't heard from any of our friends. The Seine-Inférieure has so far been well defended. But if the Prussians show up there in large numbers, it will be like everywhere else. Ah! if we had real success on the Loire, if Trochu made some fantastic outings, things would change. But will they change?

Poor Paris! poor France! We’ve never loved them so much, have we! How do you live in London? Who do you see ? I would like to keep you company. Write to me. I kiss both of your hands very hard. Your old friend – not very cheerful! Gve. »
