Andre Gide (1869.1951).

Autograph letter signed to his cousin.

Two pages in-4°. Cuverville. July 19, 1930.

“My dear cousin, Returning from Berlin, where I had spent a few days on my return from Challes, I found in Paris, yesterday, your excellent letter and the kind invitation to which I greatly regretted not being able to surrender; but it was already too late, and besides, I only lingered in Paris for a few hours – time to repack my suitcase before heading to Cuverville. Everything that you let me glimpse of this dramatic life of Aigaliers is of extreme interest, and gives me a strong desire to know his memoirs and the notice that you did very well to attach. But I am nothing less than a historian. Didn't your niece tell you about Mr. Marcel Pin, whom I had the great pleasure of meeting with her in Challes, whom she knows very well because he lives in Cannes as well as she does? Marcel Pin has been dealing exclusively with the Camisards for four years and is preparing a long work on this period of our history. It seems to me that no one can be better qualified than him to appreciate your work and that the documents collected by you could be of great help to him. Perhaps he has not yet encountered such important ones. Will you not seek to enter into relations with him? He is the kindest of men and Genolhac, where he will finish spending the summer, cannot be far from Montluçon. It may be that around mid-September, I will spend a few days with him, traveling through the Cévennes by car. If I could then go to Montluçon to present to you my respectful and affectionate memories, it would be with great pleasure. Believe me, very unforgettable your devoted cousin. »
