Beautiful letter from Nerval requesting his theatrical entries, evoking his friend Théophile Gautier.

“Your letter is so obliging that it is up to me to apologize now and acknowledge my own mistake. I had believed that Mr. de Girardin had, last year, purely and simply asked for my entries (which I had had for a long time as partial editor of the series). Théophile [Gautier] having his own as author, this changed nothing in the position of the newspaper.

You see how I was led to present myself recently without real rights, which I only did for the necessities of my work. What upset me was only a somewhat harsh process, which it would be easy to avoid in such a case. Usually the controllers understand that anyone who has already been able to obtain their entries is entitled to some consideration. They said to him, writing to him: “Sir, we do not know if your name is still in the book of entries; please make a complaint and justify your rights, – or else we will inquire and give you notice. »

In addition, we offer the spectator who has deluded himself about his position the ability to see the show end. He may find himself with people whom he finds unpleasant to leave alone. Let this be between us, Sir, you have been a journalist and you understand that this is only a humble observation on my part in the interest of all . I accept with gratitude the offer you made to me to continue my entries and I hope to be able to recognize sooner or later your excellent way of acting. I have the honor to be your most devoted servant. Gérard de Nerval. »
