“Dear Maurice, please don’t scold me—I haven’t disappeared, I haven’t even left Paris, and I’ve been quite ill with a severe case of eczema that caused me a great deal of suffering—but my phone is disconnected: the people living around me have sent me a bill for 15,000 francs that I can’t pay right now; one has to live first —though everything is better now. Jeannine is working as a night nurse. Marie is much better and has orders—but she remains terribly nervous, touchy, impossible to live with! She’s still in a convent—as for me, I’m still struggling with my American affairs and am exhausted! I was summoned to the police station with Dr. X, who, very worried about being an “accomplice,” withdrew his complaint and is only asking me to give him a small painting by Picabia. This confrontation was quite comical!!!” I think everything is settled this way – I've been in contact with Maître Arrighi's deputy, who is aware of the matter, and I will see him upon his return in September to thank him for his intervention – I didn't let you know, thinking you were on a cruise somewhere, but since you are in Paris, I would be very happy to see you – best regards and thank you for everything – G.
