In the 1840s, Liszt was at the height of his glory. He went on European tours, and invented the piano “recital” in its modern form. The public idolized him, seeing in him the emblem of demonic pianistic virtuosity, driven by the considerable progress of the instrument. In Vienna, in Budapest, in London, in Paris, in Russia, everywhere people celebrate “Lisztomania” (a term coined by Heinrich Heine and repeated endlessly in all the newspapers of the time).

In these years, and as he will do until the end of his life, Liszt puts his extraordinary velocity at the service of great composers – he will largely contribute to recognizing the genius of Beethoven – but also of his own music which he composes. with ardor. Virtuoso music up to the physical limits of the performer, but also intense reflection on the expressive means of the piano.

The manuscript is registered in the Liszt archives under the reference S164n/3.
