In the 1840s, Liszt was at the height of his fame. He embarked on a series of European tours and invented the piano recital in its modern form. The public idolized him, seeing him as the emblem of a dazzling pianistic virtuosity, fueled by the instrument's considerable advancements. In Vienna, Budapest, London, Paris, Russia—everywhere, "Lisztomania" (a term coined by Heinrich Heine and widely used in all the newspapers of the time) was celebrated.

During these years, and as he would continue to do until the end of his life, Liszt put his extraordinary speed at the service of great composers – he contributed significantly to the recognition of Beethoven's genius – but also to his own music, which he composed with fervor. This virtuoso music pushed the performer to his physical limits, but it also reflected intensely on the expressive possibilities of the piano.

The manuscript is registered in the Liszt archives under the reference S164n/3.
