Dear Gabriel Matzneff, I was very pleased to receive your note from Moscow. Your letter from Spain is in turn welcome. I did not like your attacks but appreciated their style. The absurd injustice of some of your remarks has not made me forget the joy I owe to your first book [Le Défi, published in 1965] (and the enchanted and sometimes thwarted curiosity that the second [L'Archimandrite] gave me). I very much hope to see you again, with all due respect to the bizarre idea you have of my “advisers” or my “general staff”! Let me know as soon as you return. Believe me, yours faithfully. François Mitterrand.
