François-Marius GRANET (1775.1849)

Original signed drawing. Oratory to the Virgin.

Ink, watercolor and wash on paper.

Signed in the lower right margin.

Extraordinary drawing by the Master of the Cloisters, depicting a character (here pasted on the work) at the foot of an oratory.

The finesse of the line, the vanishing lines, and the play of light and shadow bear witness here again to the fact that Granet was a great Master.

Approximately 12 x 17 cm, on ogival-shaped paper.

Work presented in a magnificent 19th century wooden frame with Byzantine decorations.

Member of the Academy of Fine Arts, François-Marius Granet was also Curator at the Louvre Museum and at the Château de Versailles.

A student of Jacques-Louis David, Granet does not hesitate to present himself as a “Christian” painter. The pictorial creation of cloisters remains his specialty and this attraction earned him the nickname “Monk”.

In Aix-en-Provence, the remarkable Museum of Fine Arts bears his name.
