François-Marius GRANET (1775.1849)

Original signed drawing. Oratory to the Virgin.

Ink, watercolor and wash on paper.

Signed in the lower right margin.

Extraordinary drawing by the Master of the Cloisters, depicting a figure (here pasted onto the work) at the foot of an oratory.

The fineness of the line, the vanishing lines, and the interplay of light and shadow testify here once again to what a great Master Granet was.

Approximately 12 x 17 cm, on ogival-shaped paper.

Artwork presented in a magnificent 19th-century wooden frame with Byzantine decorations.

A member of the Academy of Fine Arts, François-Marius Granet was also a curator at the Louvre Museum and the Palace of Versailles. A student of Jacques-Louis David, Granet readily described himself as a "Christian" painter. His specialty was painting cloisters, a passion that earned him the nickname "the Monk." In Aix-en-Provence, the remarkable Museum of Fine Arts bears his name.
