Rome. January 15, 1991.

“Dear Jean, what a pleasure your post is! What a shame we didn't meet when you were in Rome, and I in Venice. And I haven't even been able to see Balthus, but we spoke on the phone a few days ago, and from the sound of his voice, I had the impression that he is more lively, more vital. But is it so difficult to meet, dear friend? For months I have been postponing a trip to Paris which seemed so necessary, urgent, inevitable. But, obviously it wasn't, because I still allow myself to change the date. The only real reason that would give this trip a real commitment would be to tell myself that I absolutely must go to Paris to see my friend Jean. And I will do so. But if you come to Rome before, tell me as soon as possible; apart from the number of my house (6780850) I will give you that of a small studio where I happily spend hours without doing anything: 8442676. In any case, there is Fiametta, also with a number: 3224602. You tell me ask what I will do after “The Moon”? I too would like to know! but for the moment there is great silence all around, and little enthusiasm, and immobility without remorse or embarrassment. The only funny thing is that I am always followed by 3 or 4 Japanese people: they smile at me, greet me graciously, and promise me everything. I will give you news, dear Jean, but I would rather talk to you about the start of this new adventure. For now I embrace you with the feelings of true friendship. Giuletta also sends you her best wishes. See you soon, happy new year, good work, and a life full of serenity and creativity, Your Federico »
