“I wanted to finish your painting though…”

Charming letter from Boudin prevented from painting by his fatigue and the rain.

“My dear de Bériot, You will not be happy with me, I am convinced. I wanted to finish your painting but at the last moment I was no longer there and I would have spoiled everything because my brain was so tired. If I come back in good condition, it will be a matter of a few days! In the meantime, here I am sitting in Deauville, not without pain and I am overwhelmed by it. And then the weather is rainy and unpleasant. It's ugly and dull. You lose nothing by staying in Dinar again. The seaside is not pleasant and I fear that we will not be exposed to rain for a long time to come. (…) Have you finally chosen your beach? If it's Paris-plage or any other I don't wish you the wind that annoys us here. I haven't opened my box and taken out my brushes yet. That doesn't mean much to me and I'm afraid that the South has spoiled my eye a little .... »
