“My dear de Bériot, I’m sure you won’t be pleased with me. I wanted to finish your painting, but at the last minute I was no longer there, and I would have ruined everything, my brain was so exhausted. If I recover, it will only take a few days! In the meantime, here I am sitting in Deauville, not without pain, and I’m quite distressed. And then there’s the rainy, unpleasant weather. It’s ugly and dreary. You have nothing to lose by staying in Dinard a little longer. The seaside isn’t very appealing, and I’m afraid we’ll be stuck with rain for a long time to come. (…) Have you finally chosen your beach? If it’s Paris-Plage or somewhere else, I wouldn’t wish the wind that bothers us here on you. I haven’t opened my paint box and taken out my brushes yet. It doesn’t appeal to me much, and I’m afraid the South of France has spoiled my eyes a bit …”
