Paris. December 30, 1880.

“My dear ambassador, We not only want to properly place the crosses that we intend for diplomacy but we want, by having them accepted by eminent representatives of the Republic, to prove that they are of great honor. It is for this double reason that I ask you to let us carry your name among the knights that the Legion of Honor must henceforth count . If the statutes had not been so formal, it is certain that no grade other than the highest would have been offered to you, but you have to go through each grade, you know that. yes by telegram for which I will be grateful. »
