Camille MAUCLAIR (1872.1945)

Signed autograph letter.

Two pages in-12°. Saint Leu. Undated (Early 1904)

Very rare letter from Mauclair evoking the young Camille Claudel in 1904.

“My dear friend, I will perhaps ask you for lunch on Monday. As the other says, wait for me without expecting me: that is to say, I intend to come, but something may happen at the last minute. For your part, if there is one, don't write to me or worry; If I don't find you, I'll do other shopping and that's it. In no way surprised by the Matin affair, but curious to know the kind of arrogance, this, in itself, having never given rise to doubt in my predictions. The article will give great pleasure to brave Picard. Did you ask Laurent to make a drawing outside the text (Doucet told me he spoke to you about it, a litho or something. We would easily have something exquisite). You know that in fact of Miss C. who has time to wait and for whom there is no hurry, we have agreed on Miss Claudel, and for April! Another thing, I left the Pellet exhibition absolutely enthusiastic about the genius of Louis Legrand, and I dreamed of an article on him, which I feel more than all the others. We will talk about it. For the love of God, leave my ignoble portrait in the Aubry brochure forgotten. To you. Mauclair. »

Camille Mauclair, in 1901:

[…] It has been said of Mademoiselle Claudel that she had more than talent, a glimmer of genius: this is probably true, there floats around her works a sort of mental atmosphere which resembles it, and their abrupt appearance, their crude silhouette, imposed there with a magnificent heaviness, with the noble brutality of bronze and stone, placing all the weight of their shaping on the large planes, everything releases the spirit of the material with this ease which is characteristic of of soaring inspiration. It is heroic sculpture: Mademoiselle Claudel is the most notable female artist of the present time.
