André Breton (1896.1966).

Autograph letter signed to Jean Suquet.

Paris. February 11, 1960.

“Dear Jean Suquet, it was in no way up to me that you moved away and you know that I always enjoy seeing you. With Jean Schuster we have sometimes deplored that the friendship we have for you has not retained you more. That said, I continue to see you as clearly as when we met almost every day and it is rare enough for you to be sure of reaching me today or tomorrow without the slightest detour . Would you please call me (Trinity 28-33) so we can arrange a time to meet here because I am dreading these fog trains at the moment and you are so close. Very friendly to you. André Breton. »

Writer, poet, photographer and member of the Surrealist group, Jean Suquet (1928.2007), devoted a large part of his work to the study of the work of Marcel Duchamp, at the invitation of André Breton in 1949, and with the congratulations by Duchamp himself. He published numerous works on the subject from 1974 to 2004.

In his first letter to Duchamp, in July 1949, Suquet wrote: “ If I have to write about you and your work, it will not be as a critic but as a poet . »

Duchamp replied from New York on August 9: “ I completely agree with your project. And as you say, “as a poet” is the only way to say something. »
