“The letter that you did me the honor of writing to me, Madam, was sent back to me from Paris and I received it on my arrival in Rome; which alone can explain the delay in my response. It is with great regret that I will be unable to come and have the portrait you desire ; but my uncle disposed of it by will in favor of Monsieur de Bouillé. You cannot doubt, Madam, the eagerness I would have had to complete a portrait motivated by so many memories. »
