Portrait of a character smoking a cigarette; probably that of the writer and journalist André David (1899-1988) whose address in Beverly Hills was noted by Saint-Exupéry at the head of the sheet: “ 23 South Reeves Drive Beverly Hills California”.

André David founded the “Conferences of Ambassadors” to promote French culture. At the start of the Second World War, he was able to take refuge in the United States where he directed the French Institute founded in Hollywood by Charles Boyer.

In the margins of the drawing, Saint-Exupéry wrote his name and New York address: “St Ex 240 Central P[ark]”.
